Wood Philosophy

The idea behind Native Pipes is to use woods of the northeastern US to create wonderful musical instruments.

Most of my instruments are made from wood that was salvaged hardwood, wood that was already cut or fell in storms. I season it thoroughly and in most cases oil the woods thoroughly once they are made.
The woods I am currently using:

For pipes and whistles:
Sugar Maple (Acer sacchurum),
Norway Maple (Acer platanoides - actually native to Europe, but similar to Sugar Maple),
Wild Black Cherry (Prunus serotina),
American Hornbeam (Carpinus caroliniana),
Black Birch (Betula negra)

For flutes:
Red Maple (Acer rubrum)
Eastern Red Cedar (Juniperus virginiana),

I use brass and copper metal fittings for the time being.

I have always been making things. I have been making various musical instruments, especially various woodwinds, since I was about 11.
